Issaquah School District athletes earn titles

NEW — 7 p.m. May 20, 2011

Kasen Williams, of Skyline High School, and Devin Bennett, of Liberty High School, each won individual titles Wednesday at their respective post-season track and field meets.

Williams, competing in the 4A Northwest Regional meet at Marysville-Pilchuck, won the boys high jump by going 6-feet, 4 inches. He also took second in the long jump by going 22-1 1/4. Williams was just edged by Alec Fellows, of Edmonds-Woodway, who won at 22-6 1/2. Issaquah’s Jorrell Dorsey was third at 21-1 1/4.

In other first-day action at the 4A Regional, Issaquah’s Jason Hollaway finished in a tie for second place in the pole vault by going 14-6. Skyline’s Kyle Branch was third in the 1,600 in 4:21.08.

In the girls competition, Skyline’s Lindsay Coutts was second in the long jump by going 16-10. Issaquah’s Mckenna Hogan was fifth at 16-7 1/4.

The second day of the meet took place Friday.

Liberty High School Patriots win track titles

NEW — 3 p.m. May 12, 2011

Two members of the Liberty High School track and field team captured individual titles Wednesday in the first day of the 3A/2A KingCo Conference Championship meet at Juanita High School.

Joshua Gordon won the boys long jump by leaping 22 feet. He was also the top qualifier in the preliminary 200-meter race with a time of 22.47 seconds.

Devin Bennett, of Liberty, was third in the long jump by going 20-8 1/2. He was also the top qualifier in the preliminary 400 race with a time of 52.06.

Liberty’s Tyler Westendorf was fourth in the 1,600 in 4:29.52. Teammate Nick Knoblich took sixth in 4:35.20.

Kevin Ahrens, of Liberty, finished eighth in the shot put with a throw of 39-3.

In the girls competition, Liberty’s Amy Broska won the 1,600 in 5:24.17. Teammate Megan Chucka was second in 5:28.91. Rachel Shaw, of Liberty, also placed seventh in the race with a time of 5:34.81.

Bragging rights will be on the line at track tri-meet

District bragging rights will be on the line May 5 when the Liberty, Skyline and Issaquah high school track and field teams tangle at 4 p.m. in a regular-season ending meet in Issaquah’s Gary Moore Stadium.

Many athletes will use the meet to tune up for next week’s KingCo Conference championships at Juanita High School. However, head coaches for the three schools will still put together competitive lineups for the Issaquah District Meet, which annually showcases some of the top athletes in the state.

Certainly one of the headliners at this year’s meet will be Skyline’s Kasen Williams, who has the state’s best high jump at 6 feet, 11 inches and top triple jump at 48-3. Williams won the high jump and long jump April 30 at the Shoreline Invitational.

All three teams were in action last week and had some strong performances.

Liberty athletes set records at track meet

Hamilton Noel and Madison Birdsall each set school records Thursday to help their Liberty High School track and field teams defeat host Interlake in a 3A/2A KingCo Conference meet.

Noel won the pole vault with a school-record effort of 13 feet, 6 inches. He also ran on the Patriots’ winning 4×400-meter relay. Nick Knoblich, Joseph Bergmann and Hiron Redmon were other members of the relay.

The Liberty boys defeated Interlake 85-56.

Redmon won the 800. Devin Bennett captured three events for the Patriots. He won the high jump by going 6-3. He also won the long jump by going 19 feet, 1/4 inch, and took the triple jump by going 40 feet, 7 1/4 inches.

Birdsall won the 400 in a school-record time of 58.30. She also ran on the Patriots’ winning 4×200 relay and 4×400 relay. Delane Agnew, Elizabeth Ryker and Stacy Christensen were other members of the 4×200 relay. Ryker, Michaela Chucka and Agnew were other members of the 4×400 relay.

Liberty High School track team excels at meet

After spending much of the spring practicing and competing in inclement weather, the Liberty High School track team got a treat April 23, when the Patriots competed in the Viking Relays at Tacoma’s Curtis High School.

There was no rain. After being a no-show for most of the track season, El Sol finally appeared.

The Liberty boys made the most of the pleasant spring day as they finished first in the team standings. Liberty totaled 57.95 points to top second-place King’s, which had 55.9 points. The Patriots’ girls team also fared well, placing third.

“It proved to be a wonderful meet. It wasn’t windy. It was just a gorgeous day. We actually had some sunburns,” Liberty coach Michael Smith said.

Liberty High School netters whip Interlake

The Liberty High School girls tennis team took the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles matches April 12 as the Patriots defeated Interlake, 5-2, in a 3A/2A KingCo Conference match.

Amber Eastham won the No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Interlake’s Isabelle Long. Veronica Granger and Audrey LaFraugh defeated Interlake’s Iryna Strinyska and Miyati Raghavan, 6-3, 7-5, in the No. 1 doubles match.

Skyline girls bounce Inglemoor in tennis

The Skyline High School girls tennis team swept all three doubles matches en route to a 6-2 victory April 12 against Inglemoor in a 4A KingCo Conference match.

Alison Opitz and Molly Knutson, of Skyline, won the No. 1 doubles with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory against Leanna Thim and Mckayla Dear.

On April 11, Garfield swept the four singles matches to defeat Skyline, 5-2.

Skyline’s victories came in the doubles. Opitz and Knutson won the No. 1 doubles match by beating Lauren Schlechter and Sherry Tran, 6-1, 6-4. Sanjana Galgalikar and Rachel Kim, of Skyline, won the No. 3 doubles match by beating Hiroko Nakahara and Anna Cia, 3-6, 6-2, 10-8.

Skyline High School girls beat Eastlake, Garfield

NEW — 2 p.m. April 15, 2011

Elena Frerker and Jordan Branch each won two events Thursday as they led the Skyline High School girls track team to 4A KingCo Conference victories against Eastlake and Garfield.

Skyline won the three-way meet with 73 points. Eastlake was second with 68 points and Garfield was third with 35.

Frerker won the discus and the javelin.

Branch captured the 1,600 and the 3,200. She also ran of the Spartans’ winning 4×400 relay. Erin Bryar, Caitlin McIlwain and Maddi Hutson were other members of the relay.

The Skyline boys finished second to Garfield, which totaled 81 points. Skyline had 69 points and Eastlake had 31.
