Issaquah High School baseball team drops opener

NEW — 2 p.m. March 23, 2011

The Issaquah and Newport high school baseball teams have had some classic battles of the years and their Tuesday 4A KingCo Conference opener was no exception. Newport, the host team, prevailed 1-0.

Newport scored its run in the bottom of the seventh to end a pitchers’ duel.

Ethan Kalin started for Issaquah and threw hitless innings before being relieved by Scott Boydston, who blanked Newport until the seventh.

Cole Wiper, Newport’s starting pitcher, worked the first five innings and allowed just two hits. He struck out eight. Jared Fisher, the winning pitcher, worked the final two innings for Newport.

Daniel Altchech singled in pinch runner Ioannis Kritsonis with the winning run.

Eagles net season’s first victory at Patriots’ expense

The Issaquah High School girls tennis team took advantage of one of the dry days last week when it defeated host Liberty, 7-0, March 17 in a nonleague match.

The match was the first of the season for both teams.

Issaquah High School netters nab opening win

NEW — 11:45 a.m. March 18, 2011

The Issaquah High School girls tennis team opened its season Thursday with a 7-0 victory against host Liberty.

Dayna Bennett, of Issaquah, won the No. 1 singles match with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Emmie Kellog-Smith. Issaquah’s Sam Garrard and Sabrina Norton captured the No. 1 doubles match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Julie Do and Audry LaFraugh.

In other action, Skyline lost to Mercer Island 6-1. No. 4 singles player Kianna Bertonlino accounted for Skyline’s win by defeating Kajal Tiwany 7-6, 7-5.

Liberty tennis nets first win

May 4, 2010

The Liberty High School girls tennis team defeated Eastlake for the first time April 30, when the Patriots won 4-3.

Liberty’s Amber Eastham won the No. 1 singles match by defeating Hannah Thornsburg 7-5, 7-5.

Issaquah also defeated Eastlake 6-1 April 29. Alyssa Wilson, Dayna Bennett, Mary Brummit and Morgan Gierke all won their singles matches for Issaquah.

Skyline downed Mount Si 6-1 April 28, Alisa Van Grunsven won the No. 1 singles by defeating Shelby Thomas 6-1, 6-1.

Liberty, Issaquah track teams run to victory

The boys and girls track teams for Liberty and Issaquah high schools won their KingCo Conference meets Thursday.

Joshua Gordon had three first places as he led the Liberty boys past Interlake 91-55. Gordon won the 200 meters in 23.7 seconds, went 6-feet to win the high jump, and leaped 20 feet, 6 1/4 inches to take the long jump.

Peter Stacy, Devin Bennett and Troy Solly each won two events for Liberty. Stacy captured the javelin and the discus. Bennett won the 400 and the triple jump. Solly won the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles.

Issaquah tennis shuts down Liberty, 7-0

April 13, 2010

The Issaquah High School girls tennis team shut down host Liberty 7-0 in a KingCo Conference match April 8 despite unpredictable, swirling winds that occasionally lifted balls out of play.

In the No. 1 singles match, Issaquah’s Dayna Bennett defeated Liberty’s Amber Eastham in two sets. Eastham battled hard, trading blows with Bennett in close games, but Bennett prevailed, winning 6-3, 6-2.

“I just have to keep my serves strong, and just focus,” Bennett said about winning close games. She said the wind required her to focus even more.

In the No. 2 singles match, Issaquah’s Alyssa Wilson took down Liberty’s Alison Martin 6-2, 6-1.

Although Wilson dominated the match, she gave much credit to Martin.

“She was a tough a opponent, but I was playing well today,” Wilson said. Read more

Issaquah blanks Roosevelt in baseball

NEW — 1:28 p.m. April 8, 2010

Pitcher Shane Yarnell tossed a one-hitter as he sparked the Issaquah High School baseball team to a 5-0 victory April 6 against visiting Roosevelt.

Yarnell also had two hits, both doubles, to help his cause. Ben Rosellini had two hits for the Eagles, who boosted their 4A KingCo Conference record to 4-2.

In other action, it was Lake Washington 9, Skyline 1; Inglemoor 10, Eastlake 0; Redmond 4, Woodinville 3; Ballard 8, Newport 6; and Garfield 6, Bothell 2.

In the 3A/2A KingCo, Liberty blanked Sammamish 5-0 as pitcher Connor Sjolander tossed a two-hitter. In other games, it was Mount Si 7, Interlake 5; and Mercer Island 8, Juanita 3. Liberty and Mercer Island remained tied for first place.

Girls tennis teams each have areas they seek to improve upon

The Skyline High School girls tennis team went 6-3 overall last year and hopes to improve with some new faces in 2009.

Freshman newcomer Alicia VanGrunsven will lead the team at the No. 1 singles spot.

“She definitely belongs there,” head coach Bettina Gehle said. “I hope she will have a good experience.”

Freshman Allison Opitz will help out in the No. 3 doubles position.

In her second year on varsity, junior Kelly Boudwin will look to play a strong role as the No. 2 singles player.

“She’s a very talented player.” Gehle said. “She’s very solid. Has a good spirit, too.” Read more
