Quarterbacks set for big duel
Two of the state’s top high school quarterbacks will be dueling Dec. 5 when Jake Heaps, of Skyline, and Connor Halliday, of Spokane’s Joel Ferris, meet in the Class 4A state championship game at 7:30 p.m. in the Tacoma Dome.
Heaps was the 4A KingCo Conference Crest Division offensive player of the year. He was also named this week as the 2009-10 Gatorade Washington Player of the Year. Heaps is a two-time recipient of the award. He is also in the running for the Gatorade National Player of the Year award, which will be announced later this month.
The Skyline quarterback is attempting to lead the Spartans to a third straight state title. Skyline defeated Issaquah 20-15 for the 4A title last year, and rallied for a 42-35 victory against O’Dea in 2007 to win the 3A championship. Heaps, who is headed for Brigham Young University, has a 39-2 record as a starter. This season he has thrown for 2, 936 yards and 41 touchdowns.
