In “The Road” (1907), Jack London observed, “The hobo never knows what is going to happen the next moment; hence, he lives only in the present moment.”

The life of the hobo may be of the moment, but the fundamental need for shelter has spanned the ages. In the economic depressions of the 1890s and 1930s, there was a surge of homelessness, and hobos like Jack London hitched rides on trains in search of better opportunities.

Railroad towns like Issaquah were brief stopping points, and sometimes destinations.

Issaquah Valley Trolley service starts soon

The vintage Issaquah Valley Trolley resumes service downtown May 17.

The car will run from the Train Depot to the east fork of Issaquah Creek and back from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Passengers purchase boarding passes at the depot ticket window, 78 First Ave. N.E. Fares, a suggested $5 donation per person, includes admission to the Depot Museum and Gilman Town Hall Museum. Children 5 and younger are free, as well as History Museums members with membership cards.

Issaquah History Museums presents ‘Cougar Mountain in the Cold War’ on Saturday

NEW — Noon Jan. 17, 2014

The Issaquah History Museums will host its first program of 2014 with its presentation of “Cougar Mountain in the Cold War: Issaquah’s NIKE Missile Base.”

Local expert Doug Bristol will present the story of the strategic missile site that was located on the site of present-day Radar Park in the Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park.
