Off The Press — Influence the Choice videos amaze, inspire

There were 11 winners, but if you ask me, everyone who entered the 2015 Influence The Choice Student Video Contest were winners.

In this year’s contest, from Jan. 1 through Feb. 28, 260 students participated in producing 100 videos. Those entries represented 959 creating hours!

National Merit Scholarship

Five local high school seniors are among its collegiate-sponsored winners for the 2014 scholarship program of the National Merit Scholarship Corp.:

  • Catherine Ball, Issaquah High School, is pursuing a degree in computer programming at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.
  • Grant Vaska, Issaquah High School, will attend Washington University in St. Louis, Minn.
  • Kathleen Park, of Sammamish, will pursue a degree in communications at Wheaton College near Chicago.
  • Shanchen Pu, of Sammamish, will pursue a degree in medicine at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
  • Nikila Vinugopal, of Sammamish, will pursue a career in dance at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

Local students nominated for Emmy Awards

NEW — 6 a.m. May 22, 2014

Music videos are a form of storytelling, and four Skyline High School students decided to weave a story of their own around a well-known song.

Students Damian Banki, Jeremy Millar, Langston Nichols and Andrea Gomez acted in, filmed and edited a three-minute, 46-second video set to the background of Coldplay’s “Paradise.”

Their work was recently nominated for a student Emmy Award by the Northwest chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Their adaptation of “Paradise” is one of six nominations in the music video category, and they’ll have a chance to win the award at the 51st annual Northwest Regional Emmy Awards on June 7 in Seattle.
