Liberty High School athletic teams could find themselves competing in a lower division next school year, after the Washington Interscholastic Athletics Association released new classification data.
Every two years, the WIAA examines enrollment numbers to determine in what division school sports teams will compete.
“Although this process is not complete, there is high probability that LHS will compete at the 2A level starting next year,” Liberty Principal Josh Almy wrote in an email to parents.
With an enrollment number of 891, Liberty is the size of a 2A school, though in the past it has opted up to play in the 3A division.
Liberty would continue to compete in the competitive KingCo League, which already includes both 3A and 2A schools. The difference would come in postseason play, when the Patriots would compete against other 2A schools.
