Liberty High School students took home a slew of top awards at the 2015 Washington State History Day competition May 2.
This year’s theme was “Leadership and Legacy in History.” The school sent 16 students to the contest at Green River Community College, and eight of them qualified for the national competition by placing in the top two of their categories.

Students from across the Eastside descended on Liberty High School on March 14 for the 2015 regional History Day competition.
History buffs from local school districts showed off their exhibits, performances, papers and websites.
Liberty’s participation in the contest has grown over the years, buoyed by the success of its students qualifying for the national competition in Washington, D.C.

Skyline’s Kathy Lin/relays medal and Issaquah’s Jenifer Matsuda picks up two
Just three days before the last state swim final of her career, Liberty High School star Mackenna Briggs was calm and determined.
Briggs signed her name to papers Nov. 12 solidifying her commitment to swim for the University of San Diego.

Liberty swim team defeats Issaquah in historic win
There is something special brewing in the waters of the Julius Boehm Pool, where the Liberty High School girls swim team practices and competes.
The 2A school is turning heads across the league, defeating schools much larger, on the way to an undefeated meet record more than halfway through the season.
Liberty defeated 4A schools Newport and Skyline; and on Oct. 2, the Patriots made history, defeating Issaquah for the first time ever.
“We’re a 2A team this year and we beat 4A teams,” Liberty senior captain Mackenna Briggs said. “It’s something that we couldn’t have envisioned and now that we’re doing it, we’re all really, really proud.”

History Day competitors make it to nationals
Liberty High School student Lorrin Johnson is almost at a loss for words when asked to describe her love of history.
It’s not because she can’t find the words, it’s just that she has so many things to say about her favorite subject, it’s hard to whittle them down to a few coherent sentences.
“Don’t get me started,” she joked. “I’ve gone on rants about it before.”

After finishing fifth at the 2012 state championships, the Skyline High School girls swimming and diving team didn’t want to go home again without some hardware.
