Logan Briggs and Kevin Hays each won two individual races and swam on two winning relays as the Liberty High School boys swimming team cruised by Lake Washington 130-49 Tuesday in a 3A/2A KingCo Conference meet at Julius Boehm Pool.
Briggs captured the 100-yard butterfly in 56.68 seconds and took the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.83. He swam on the Patriots’ winning 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.
Hays won the 200 freestyle in 2:03.51 and the 500 freestyle in 5:38.30. He also swam on the Patriots’ winning 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.
Connor Biehl, of Liberty, won the 200 individual medley. He also swam on all three winning relays.
Raymond Ha and Luke Duschl won individual events and swam on winning relays, too.

There weren’t many swimmers busier than Liberty High School’s Logan Briggs at the 3A State Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 18-19 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
On the final day, Briggs competed in five events. He didn’t come in first, but did grab a third place in the 500-yard freestyle to cap a super sophomore season.

Sophomore Logan Briggs qualifies in seven events for state
Although Logan Briggs is just a sophomore at Liberty High School, he’s already making a splash in the world of high school swimming. He qualified in seven events for this year’s 3A state championship meet, and set personal and school records at the 3A Sea-King District meet Feb. 13 in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle.
Liberty finished sixth in the team standings at the Sea-King District meet. The Patriots had 121 points. Mercer Island cruised to the team title, compiling 345.5 points. Lakeside, of Seattle, was second with 176.

Liberty High School swimmer Logan Briggs has already had quite a season to date. However, it got even better Feb. 6, when the Patriot sophomore set a meet record at the KingCo Conference Championships at Mercer Island’s Mary Wayte Pool.
Briggs won the 200-yard individual medley in a state-qualifying time of 1 minute, 58.81 seconds. He finished far ahead of Garfield’s Reid Walker, who was second in 2:00.52. The winning time was a good drop for Briggs, who had the fastest preliminary time of 2:00.55.
Briggs also placed sixth in the 100 butterfly in 56.38. Read more

Going into the Jan. 26 meet with Skyline High School, Liberty standout Logan Briggs needed just one more stellar performance to qualify for all eight individual events at state.
He knew he could win the 100-yard butterfly — he had previously swum it as fast as 56.23 seconds. The problem was, he had run up a mountain over the weekend during a workout. He was a bit sore and not quite sure what to expect in terms of hitting the state mark, he said. Read more

Liberty swimmers win third straight meet
The Liberty High School boys swimming team won its third straight KingCo Conference meet Dec. 15 when the Patriots swamped Interlake 104-75.
Luke Duschl and Logan Briggs each won two events for the Patriots, who are 3-1 in KingCo competition this season. Duschl captured the 200 freestyle in 2 minutes, 01.08 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 54.22. He also swam anchor on the Patriots’ winning 400 freestyle relay. Raymond Ha, Kevin Hays and Shunya Asano were other members of the relay.
Briggs won the 50 freestyle in 23.37 and the 100 backstroke in 57.46.
Other Liberty first places came from Cameron Kaulia in diving and Ha in the 100 butterfly,

The Liberty High School boys swimming team has often lacked depth and talent in recent years to be competitive in the KingCo Conference.
However, based on their efforts last week, the Patriots are a team that opponents can’t take lightly this season.
Liberty won two KingCo meets last week, defeating rival Issaquah 95-88 Dec. 8, and topping Eastlake 98-88 Dec. 11.
In the meet with Eastlake at the Redmond Pool, Shunya Asano had two first-place finishes and swam as a member of two winning relay teams for the Patriots.
Asano won the 200 individual medley in 2:19.12 and the 100 freestyle in 56.40. He also swam as a member of the Patriots’ winning 200 freestyle relay team and the 400 freestyle relay team. Liberty swept all three relays. Read more

Local teams reach state tournaments
This is a busy week for several local high school sports teams as they enter state tournaments.
The Issaquah High School girls soccer team, which won the 4A KingCo Conference tournament last week, entertains Bellarmine Prep at 7 p.m. Nov. 10 in the first round of the 4A state tournament.
Skyline, the defending state 4A champions, also plays Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. against Tahoma at Tahoma.
The Issaquah volleyball team plays Kentwood Nov. 12 in the first round of the 4A state tournament in Kennewick’s Toyota Center. The tournament continues through Nov. 13.
