Liberty girls basketball team rallies by Mercer Island

The Liberty High School girls basketball team staged a tremendous fourth-quarter rally Dec. 15 as the Patriots overcame visiting Mercer Island, 45-41, in a KingCo Conference 3A/2A contest.
Liberty trailed 35-20 with five minutes left in the game but outscored Mercer Island, 25-6, down the stretch to win the game.
Aspen Winegar had 14 points to lead Liberty. Sierra Carlson added nine points and Delane Agnew scored eight points as Liberty improved its league-leading record to 4-0. The Patriots are 6-0 for the season.
Mercer Island’s Krista Brackman led all players with 15 points.

The Liberty High School girls basketball team staged a tremendous fourth-quarter rally Thursday as the Patriots overcome visiting Mercer Island 45-41 in a KingCo Conference 3A/2A contest.

Liberty girls basketball team wins fourth straight

The Liberty High School girls basketball team overcame a nine-point halftime deficit Dec. 7 and rallied for a 50-47 KingCo Conference 3A/2A victory against host Bellevue.
Liberty, 2-0 in the league and 4-0 overall, trailed 30-21 at halftime. However, the Patriots shot ahead in the third quarter by outscoring Bellevue, 14-4.
Delane Agnew paced Liberty with 14 points. Aspen Winegar added 13 points and Sierra Carlson had six points for Liberty.
On Dec. 5, Liberty built up a 16-point first half lead and rolled to a 63-54 nonleague victory against visiting Newport,
Liberty shot to a 17-13 first quarter lead, and then blew out Newport 14-2 in the second period.
Winegar paced the victorious Patriots with 19 points. Carlson and Stephanie Yea each tallied 14 points.
Spartans win KingCo 4A girls basketball opener
The Skyline High School girls basketball team broke open a tight game by outscoring visiting Roosevelt, 18-4, in the third quarter en route to a 53-36 victory in the KingCo Conference 4A opener for both teams.
Skyline led 22-19 at halftime before pulling away in the second half.
Allie Wyszynski led Skyline with 14 points and Megan Wiedeman added 13 points. Rachel Shim and Haley Smith each had eight points for Skyline, 2-1 in the season.
Unbeaten Patriots basketball team overcomes Bellevue

Liberty, 2-0 in league and 4-0 overall, trailed 30-21 at halftime. However, the Patriots shot ahead in the third quarter by outscoring Bellevue 14-4.
Delane Agnew paced Liberty with 14 points. Aspen Winegar added 13 points and Sierra Carlson had six points for Liberty.
Bellevue’s Katie Savard led all players with 19 points.
In other league action, it was Mercer Island 48, Sammamish 36; Juanita 52, Lake Washington 40; and Mount Si 53, Interlake 37.

The Liberty girls team rallied in the second half Dec. 2 to defeat host Sammamish, 39-34, in a KingCo Conference 3A/2A opener. Liberty trailed by one point at halftime, but surged ahead in the second half to win the game.
Aspen Winegar led the Patriots with 13 points.
On Nov. 29, Liberty shot to a 10-point first quarter lead and stayed in front for good to beat host Sumner, 57-45, in a nonleague game. Winegar led all players with 25 points. Sierra Carlson added 11 points for the Patriots.

The Liberty High School girls basketball team build up a 16-point first half lead en route to a 63-54 victory against visiting Newport on Monday in a nonleague victory.
The win was Liberty’s third in three games this season.
Liberty shot to a 17-13 first quarter lead, then blew out Newport 14-2 in the second period.
Aspen Winegar paced the victorious Patriots with 19 points. Sierra Carlson and Stephanie Yea each tallied 14 points.
Eagles, Patriots basketball teams win season openers

The Issaquah High School boys basketball team and the Liberty girls squad both opened their seasons Tuesday with nonleague victories.
The Issaquah boys cruised by host Mount Si 76-36. After a close first quarter that saw Issaquah lead 10-7, the Eagles blew out Mount Si 26-9 in the second quarter and raced away to the victory.
Issaquah senior guard Nick Price hit 8 of 15 shots and finished the night with a game-high 18 points. He also grabbed six rebounds, blocked two shots and had three assists.
Ty Gibson contributed 10 points for the Eagles. Jake Henke added nine points. Ryan Sexton and Grant Bair, who each hit a pair of three-point field goals, each had eight points.
Trio of Patriots make 3A All-KingCo

The Liberty High School girls basketball program had one of its best seasons in several years this winter.
Among the reasons for the Patriots’ success were the contributions of Danni Sjolander, Aspen Winegar and Halie Ericksen.

All three Liberty players received post-season honors at they led the Patriots to a 15-10 record.
Sjolander was selected to the 3A/2A All-KingCo Conference girls first team. Winegar and Ericksen were picked for the second team.
The trio helped the Patriots reach the 3A Sea-King District Tournament. Liberty had a 9-5 record in league play and tied for third place.
Sjolander, a 6-foot-1 senior, led the Patriots in scoring by averaging 13.1 points per game. She also averaged 2.1 assists, 2.6 blocks, 7.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals.
“She had a good year,” Liberty coach Randy Leifer said. “She was really the leader of our team.”
Sjolander, a three-year starter, had three games where she scored 20 or more points. She had a season-high game against Mercer Island in December. Sjolander, who ranked third in league scoring, was a versatile player on offense.
“She can shoot both the outside shot and post up,” Leifer said.
Seasons end for Issaquah School District basketball teams

The basketball seasons for the Skyline High School boys basketball team, the girls teams for Issaquah and Liberty came to an end last week when all three were eliminated in post-season tournaments.
The Skyline boys fell to Newport 53-46 Feb. 17 in a loser-out game in the 4A KingCo tournament at Juanita.
It looked too easy for Skyline early in the game when the Spartans shot to an 8-0 lead and held an 18-6 advantage going into the second quarter. However, Newport tightened its defense and fought back. The Knights went ahead 31-26 in the third quarter.
Kasen Williams topped Skyline with 10 points and seven rebounds. He sat out most of the second half because of foul trouble. Hunter Cikatz, Will Parker and Lucas Shannon each had eight points for the Spartans.
Issaquah girls basketball team stays alive in tournament

The Issaquah High School girls basketball team kept alive its hopes of landing a Class 4A State Tournament berth Tuesday with a 59-54 victory against Garfield in a loser-out game at the KingCo Tournament at Juanita High School.
Issaquah, 17-6, still needs to win two more games to earn a state tournament berth. The Eagles play Eastlake, 20-3, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Juanita in a game that determines the league’s No. 3 seed. The No. 3 seed plays a Western Conference team Feb. 22 for a berth in the state tournament.
The Eagles, smarting from a 58-55 overtime loss to rival Skyline Feb. 7, took control of their game with Garfield in the first quarter. Issaquah shot to an 18-8 lead and held a commanding 30-19 lead at halftime.
