When Liberty High School tennis player Jenny Adams is at the top of her game, she can easily defeat an opponent in 30 to 40 minutes, she estimated.
Her April 3 matchup against Interlake’s Isabelle Long took nearly two hours, though, and unfortunately for Adams, ended in defeat.

After qualifying for districts in a grueling match at the KingCo district tournament, Liberty High School sophomore Jenny Adams’ tank was on empty. But despite being miles away from the nearest gas station, she got out and pushed.
“She started off really strong,” Liberty tennis coach Mike Salokas said. “Strong in strokes, and strong in conditioning.”
After being up 3-2 in the first set, Adams quickly started struggling to keep up. She lost the first set, 6-3, and the second, 6-1, to Shea Wojciehowski, of Lakeside High School.

The high school girls tennis season in Western Washington starts for most youth athletes not on a court made of clay, concrete or grass, but in a gym.
“The girls always get the crappy weather,” Issaquah head coach Shannon Small said.
With most teams only getting a few outdoor practices, preparation time for the players and coaches is short.
“We’ve had probably 14 or 15 practice days,” Liberty High School head coach Mike Salokas said. “And because of weather we’ve been able to be outside probably four. If we were having this interview a few days ago that would have been very different, because you would have asked me who my best players were and I would have told you who could run around the gym floor the most times.”
Issaquah soccer blitzes Bothell and Ballard

The Issaquah High School boys soccer team stayed in the running for the regular-season 4A KingCo Conference title last week by posting two victories.
Michael Roberts and Alex Shane each scored two goals April 26 as Issaquah blitzed host Bothell, 5-1, in Pop Keeney Stadium.
Shane put the Eagles ahead with an unassisted goal at the third minute. Roberts, assisted by Shane, scored 10 minutes later as the Eagles went ahead for good.
On April 30, Issaquah downed host Ballard, 4-1. Shane had a goal and two assists to lead the Eagles, who trailed 1-0 at halftime. Roberts had a goal and an assist.
Shane tied the game in the 66th minute. Akash Ramachandran, assisted by Cooper Fry, put Issaquah ahead to stay at the 69th minute.
Issaquah improved its league record to 6-2-1. The Eagles trail Skyline, Garfield and Eastlake, all tied for the top spot, by just three points entering this week’s final round.
Liberty athletes set records at track meet

Hamilton Noel and Madison Birdsall each set school records Thursday to help their Liberty High School track and field teams defeat host Interlake in a 3A/2A KingCo Conference meet.
Noel won the pole vault with a school-record effort of 13 feet, 6 inches. He also ran on the Patriots’ winning 4×400-meter relay. Nick Knoblich, Joseph Bergmann and Hiron Redmon were other members of the relay.
The Liberty boys defeated Interlake 85-56.
Redmon won the 800. Devin Bennett captured three events for the Patriots. He won the high jump by going 6-3. He also won the long jump by going 19 feet, 1/4 inch, and took the triple jump by going 40 feet, 7 1/4 inches.
Birdsall won the 400 in a school-record time of 58.30. She also ran on the Patriots’ winning 4×200 relay and 4×400 relay. Delane Agnew, Elizabeth Ryker and Stacy Christensen were other members of the 4×200 relay. Ryker, Michaela Chucka and Agnew were other members of the 4×400 relay.

There’s nothing in springtime sports quite like three straight dry days.
And for the Skyline High School girls tennis team, three days without rain meant three matches in a row to make up for a plethora of postponements.
Although the Spartans are in a rebuilding year, the squad showed some promise by winning its third match in as many days April 21 in Sammamish.
After beating Redmond April 19 and Eastlake April 20, it blanked Bothell, 7-0, to improve to 5-2.
Issaquah softball rolls to second consecutive win

The Issaquah High School softball team erupted for four runs in the bottom of the second inning Tuesday as the Eagles defeated visiting Inglemoor 6-4 in a 4A KingCo Conference contest.
Heather Benjamin led Issaquah with three hits. The victory was the second in a row for Issaquah.
The Eagles also defeated host Bothell 7-3 Monday. Issaquah scored four times in the top of the fifth inning to break open the contest. Benjamin again led the Eagles with two hits and four runs batted in. Winning pitcher Brielle Bray struck out six batters.
In other action, Skyline lost to visiting Woodinville 13-2. The day before, Skyline whipped Roosevelt 13-7. Anya Kamber went 6-for-6 for Skyline and drove in two runs. Lindsey Nicholson had two hits and drove in a run. Megan Burns was the winning pitcher for Skyline.
In the 3A/2A KingCo Conference, Liberty walloped visiting Mercer Island 14-2 April 19. Taylor Wiek had three hits to lead Liberty. Marissa Jeffers contributed two hits and three runs batted in, and Jenn Rucker had two hits and two RBIs for the Patriots. Liberty scored 11 times in the bottom of the second inning.

The Liberty High School girls tennis team took the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles matches April 12 as the Patriots defeated Interlake, 5-2, in a 3A/2A KingCo Conference match.
Amber Eastham won the No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Interlake’s Isabelle Long. Veronica Granger and Audrey LaFraugh defeated Interlake’s Iryna Strinyska and Miyati Raghavan, 6-3, 7-5, in the No. 1 doubles match.
Skyline girls bounce Inglemoor in tennis
The Skyline High School girls tennis team swept all three doubles matches en route to a 6-2 victory April 12 against Inglemoor in a 4A KingCo Conference match.
Alison Opitz and Molly Knutson, of Skyline, won the No. 1 doubles with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory against Leanna Thim and Mckayla Dear.
On April 11, Garfield swept the four singles matches to defeat Skyline, 5-2.
Skyline’s victories came in the doubles. Opitz and Knutson won the No. 1 doubles match by beating Lauren Schlechter and Sherry Tran, 6-1, 6-4. Sanjana Galgalikar and Rachel Kim, of Skyline, won the No. 3 doubles match by beating Hiroko Nakahara and Anna Cia, 3-6, 6-2, 10-8.

Issaquah High School baseball team drops opener

The Issaquah and Newport high school baseball teams have had some classic battles of the years and their Tuesday 4A KingCo Conference opener was no exception. Newport, the host team, prevailed 1-0.
Newport scored its run in the bottom of the seventh to end a pitchers’ duel.
Ethan Kalin started for Issaquah and threw hitless innings before being relieved by Scott Boydston, who blanked Newport until the seventh.
Cole Wiper, Newport’s starting pitcher, worked the first five innings and allowed just two hits. He struck out eight. Jared Fisher, the winning pitcher, worked the final two innings for Newport.
Daniel Altchech singled in pinch runner Ioannis Kritsonis with the winning run.
