Rachel Roeder had 24 kills and 10 digs Wednesday as she led the unbeaten Issaquah High School volleyball team to a 3-1 4A KingCo Conference victory against rival Skyline.
Issaquah won the first game 25-13 but Skyline fought back to take the second game 25-17. The Eagles captured the third game 25-6 and wrapped up the match by winning the fourth game 25-20.
The Eagles, coming off a big victory earlier in the week against Woodinville, again had a strong all-around team effort. Sarah Hanna contributed 20 kills and three blocks. Riley Sorenson had 48 assists and five aces. Sam Rogers’ serving led to a seven aces and Alexa Batiquin had 12 digs.
Issaquah improved its league-leading record to 5-0 and season mark to 8-0.
Maddie Magee had 11 kills, Andrea Chon had 14 digs and Madison Stoa had 19 assists for Skyline, which is 1-4 in league and 4-5 on the season.

It’s been a while since the Liberty High School girls soccer team was one of the most dominant teams in the KingCo Conference and ranked among the best in the state.
However, the Patriots, under new coach Malia Arrant, have returned to their winning ways this season. Liberty won its sixth straight 3A/2A KingCo Conference game Sept. 30 by edging Mercer Island 3-2. Cassidy Nangle had a big night for the Patriots. She scored two goals and assisted on a goal by Kimi Fry.
The victory boosted Liberty’s league-leading record to 6-0.
Liberty also defeated host Juanita 2-0 Sept. 28. The Patriots scored both goals in the second half. Whitney Cain, assisted by Kailiana Johnson, broke a scoreless tie with a goal at the 60th minute. Nangle, assisted by Fry, scored eight minutes later.
Goalkeepers Macaire Ament and Jennifer Rucker recorded the shutout.

The Issaquah High School volleyball team remained undefeated Monday after the Eagles downed host Woodinville 3-1 in a 4A KingCo Conference match. Issaquah won 25-17, 22-25, 25-16, 25-13.
Rachel Roeder paced the Eagles with 29 kills and nine aces. Alexa Batiquin added 18 digs, and Riley Sorenson had 50 assists and five aces.
Issaquah boosted its league record to 4-0 and season mark to 7-0. Woodinville suffered its first league defeat.
In other action, Newport defeated Skyline 25-17, 25-19, 25-18 to stay tied with Issaquah for first place. Madison Stoa had 18 assists and 11 digs, and Maddie Magee had 10 kills for Skyline, which is 1-3 in league play and 4-4 on the season.

The Issaquah High School volleyball team seems to be picking up where it left off last season – hot!
Issaquah finished the 2009 season with three straight victories at the 4A state tournament. Entering this week, the Eagles had won their first four matches of the season. Included among the triumphs were 4A KingCo Conference victories against Inglemoor and Bothell.
And, the Eagles also had a special 3-1 nonleague victory against Kentwood, which defeated Issaquah in the opening round of last year’s state tournament. Read more

The Mercer Island Islanders have usually had their way with the Liberty High School volleyball team in recent years. However, the Islanders’ dominance came to an end Monday when the host Patriots prevailed 3-2 in a dramatic 3A/2A KingCo Conference match.
Liberty won the tie-breaking fifth game 15-5 to hand Mercer Island its first loss of the season. Mercer Island won the first game 25-12 but Liberty bounced back to win the next two games 25-19 and 25-22. The Islanders sent the match into overtime by winning the fourth game 25-22.
The Patriots, 4-2 in league play, received outstanding efforts from several players. Megan Tsutakawa had a team-high 32 assists. Katie Walsh had a team-high 12 kills and four aces. Kristy Braunston had a strong defensive game with a team-high 15 digs. Aspen Winegar had eight kills and 10 digs, Sarah Hewitt had five kills and five blocks, Molly Culwell had six kills and four aces, and Jessica Pickering had eight kills.
Mercer Island, which entered the match in first place, is 5-1 in league play and 6-1 for the season.

Patriots pummel Sammamish
Chandler Jenkins scored five touchdowns and accumulated 317 offensive yards Sept. 17 as he sparked the Liberty High School Patriots to a 52-7 3A/2A KingCo Conference rout of host Sammamish.
Sammamish scored first in the game on a 53-yard run by Austin Lee. The Patriots, 2-1 on the season, then countered with 52 unanswered points.
Jenkins rushed for two touchdowns in the first quarter, bolting for runs of 65 yards and 30 yards. He also rushed for two touchdowns in the second quarter on runs of seven and 41 yards. Read more

Senior outside hitter Rachel Roeder’s offensive and defensive efforts Monday helped spark the Issaquah High School volleyball team to a 3-0 victory against visiting Inglemoor in the 4A KingCo Conference opener for both teams. Issaquah won the games 25-11, 25-14, 25-21.
Roeder, one of six seniors who have been on the varsity squad all four years, had 12 kills, 12 digs and three aces. Seniors Sarah Hanna, Alexa Batiquin and Riley Sorenson were other key contributors for the Eagles.
Hanna, an outside hitter, had 14 kills. Batiquin, a setter, had 10 digs and Sorenson, an outside hitter, had 32 assists.
It wasn’t just a senior show, however. Junior outside hitter Sam Rogers contributed five kills for the Eagles, 3-0 overall on the season. Issaquah has plenty of experience and depth this season. The players want to improve on last year’s performance, which wasn’t bad, as the Eagles won the district title and finished fifth at the 4A state tournament.

Cameron Simpson shot a par 36 Monday to lead the unbeaten Issaquah High School boys golf team to a 187-198 victory against visiting Inglemoor in a 4A KingCo Conference match at the Snoqualmie Falls Golf Course.
Bryan Jung and Alex Ciszewski each shots 37s for Issaquah, which raised its record to 4-0. The Eagles meet Eastlake on Thursday in a key 4A KingCo Conference match at the Sahalee Country Club.
In 3A/2A KingCo action, Mount Si defeated Liberty 204-212 at the Maplewood Golf Course in Renton. Jack Kelley, of Mount Si, was medalist with a par 36. Jordan Thompson and Harrison Diemert each had 40s to lead Liberty.

Ben Halter shot a 1-under-par 35 Wednesday as he led the Issaquah High School boys golf team to a 184-211 victory against visiting Garfield at the Snoqualmie Falls Golf Course.
The win was the second straight for Issaquah in 4A KingCo Conference competition.
Alex Ciszewski was second for Issaquah with a par 36. Brendan Jung and Matthew Gann each had 37s for the Eagles.
