Tent City 4 stay eases Faith United fears

Faith United Methodist Church’s volatile decision to host Tent City 4 changed a lot of minds, church leaders said as the traveling homeless shelter moved to its next site May 31.

After leaving Sammamish’s Mary, Queen of Peace in January, Tent City 4 set up for an emergency 30-day stay in Lake Sammamish State Park with the approval of the state. With options running low, the regional shelter petitioned for Faith United, located near the Klahanie neighborhood, to host the encampment.

“We kind of had to scramble to get things together, which we did,” Pastor John Brewer said. “After we got out in front of it, the experience itself of hosting Tent City 4 has gone very, very well. It went really without incident.”

As a resident of Tent City 4, Alan Evans knows the importance of keeping a clean, warm blanket to make it through the wet and cold winter months.

“I used to do my blankets myself in downtown Issaquah,” said Evans, who’s been living in Tent City for the past four months.

Church to hold community meeting on Tent City 4

NEW — 10:19 a.m., Oct. 3, 2013

Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church will hold a meeting to provide information and gather input from the community about possibly hosting Tent City 4.

The church’s pastoral council met Oct. 2 as part of the church community’s “process of discernment,” said Rich Shively, pastoral administrator. The council did not offer any formal recommendation that evening, Shively said, but discussions were generally positive.
