There was an abundance of motivation for the Skyline Spartans to win a trophy at the Class 4A state volleyball tournament for the third time in four seasons.
The incentives were there for the Spartans and their nine seniors, but the opposition proved too challenging as Skyline finished the Nov. 14-15 event in Lacey with a 1-2 record. The second loss, a 3-1 setback to Central Valley, kept Skyline from coming home with any hardware.

Bragging rights are always at stake when the Issaquah Eagles and Skyline Spartans meet, and that was the case again in an Oct. 23 volleyball match.
First-place Skyline earned the bragging rights, starting fast and building momentum on its way to a 25-18, 25-17, 25-15 victory over visiting Issaquah in Class 4A KingCo Conference action.
“We focused and we remained really steady through the whole entire match,” said Skyline’s Kate Richardson, a junior outside hitter. “It was really fun to see everyone try really hard to beat Issaquah.”

Neither team could have been entirely comfortable with the 9:45 a.m. start time at the Class 4A state volleyball tournament, but it wasn’t the early start that got the Skyline Spartans in trouble.
A veteran Skyline squad appeared jittery and unfocused when they opened the tourney Nov. 15 against the Emerald Ridge Jaguars. A slow start doomed the Spartans as they dropped a 25-11, 26-24, 25-20 decision in the opening match at Saint Martin’s University in Lacey.

Coming off a sixth-place finish in 2011 at the Class 4A state volleyball tournament, the Skyline High School Spartans felt 2012 would be a season for them to challenge for a championship.
It didn’t quite work out that way. Skyline had a dominating regular season, and then beat Newport to capture the KingCo Conference tournament title. At state, however, the Spartans got off to a slow start, losing to Union in straight sets. They beat Wenatchee to stay alive for a trophy, but were swept out of the tourney at the hands of Auburn Riverside.
It was an experience that this year’s four seniors — including reigning all-conference selections Crystal Anderson and Molly Mounsey — may use for motivation.
