Committee questions Polygon development cooperation

Many questions surround discussions about a huge Issaquah Highlands development that city officials hope will bring a high-tech college campus to the parcel.

Economic Development Director Keith Niven introduced a draft development agreement between Issaquah and Polygon Northwest to the City Council Land and Shore Committee at its Dec. 10 meeting. The committee voted to recommend to the full council that the administration proceed with negotiating a new development agreement, but did not reach the decision unanimously.

City wants a college to replace Microsoft campus

An educational institution might replace the vision of an Issaquah Highlands Microsoft campus.

The city will begin the process of establishing a development agreement with the new landowner, Polygon Northwest, in the coming weeks. Microsoft sold the 63-acre parcel in October for an undisclosed amount. In the meantime, Issaquah Economic Development Director Keith Niven gave a view of what the city hopes to see in the final document.

“That land would allow for a lot of different things to happen, including residential,” Niven said, explaining what the aim is for the final deal. “We’re just trying to work towards where they can build what they want and the city can work to find an employment hub up in the highlands.”

Microsoft sells Highlands property

Microsoft, which once envisioned a major campus in the Issaquah Highlands, has sold the 63-acre tract to a local developer for a mixed-use project.

Microsoft representatives signed paperwork Oct. 18 to sell the land to a company apparently affiliated with Bellevue-based homebuilder Polygon Northwest.

“We no longer had requirements for office developments in Issaquah,” Microsoft spokesman Lou Gellos said.

City Council approves Issaquah Highlands land sale

City Council members agreed April 16 to sell land to homebuilder Polygon Homes, despite objections from local environmentalists.

The city earned $80,000 in the land sale — dollars earmarked for landscaping in Central Park and elsewhere, wetland programs and Park Pointe conservation.

The property is 14,693 square feet, or about the size of the Issaquah Library, in the Issaquah Highlands’ Forest Ridge subdivision. Polygon intends to use the land for residences.

The property is included in the complicated Park Pointe transfer of development rights. In exchange for preserving a forested Tiger Mountain site near Issaquah High School, officials agreed to open additional highlands land to development. The long process ended in March 2011.

Despite the conditions council members added to the agreement, leaders in the environmental community protested the decision.

David Kappler, Issaquah Alps Trails Club president and a former councilman, and Janet Wall, a longtime local environmentalist, urged the council to reconsider. Kappler raised safety concerns about a trail leading to the property.

The council approved the sale in a 5-1 decision. Councilman Paul Winterstein dissented. Councilman Joshua Schaer did not attend the meeting.

Life Enrichment Options plans home, fundraiser

Founded 22 years ago by the parents of children with intellectual or developmental disabilities, Issaquah’s Life Enrichment Options is expanding.

One of the organization’s founders as well as a member of its board of directors, Rose Finnegan said LEO’s third family home should be completed by December.

The group also is planning what Finnegan said is only the second fundraising event in its history.

Harvesting Hope is the name of LEO’s luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 20 at Pickering Barn. Sammamish City Council member and former host of TV’s “Evening Magazine” John Curley will host the event.

LEO’s third facility sits in the Issaquah Highlands at the corner of 25th Avenue Northeast and Northeast Logan Street.

Bellevue homebuilder purchases 48 Issaquah Highlands lots

Taylor Development, a Bellevue-based real estate firm, is joining Issaquah Highlands developer Port Blakely Communities to foster development in the Harrison Street neighborhood, a ritzy collection of custom homes perched on Grand Ridge.

The real estate firm purchased 48 lots in the neighborhood for $6.36 million. Taylor Development and Port Blakely announced the deal May 23.

The sale encompasses more than half of the lots along Harrison Street. The neighborhood includes about 90 home sites. So, far 35 have been sold, and of those, 24 are completed or under-construction.

The neighborhood features a panorama — on clear days, at least — of the Bellevue and Seattle skylines, plus the Olympic Mountains.

Taylor Development, a Bellevue-based real estate firm, is joining Issaquah Highlands developer Port Blakely Communities to foster development in the Harrison Street neighborhood, a ritzy collection of custom homes perched on Grand Ridge.

Taylor Development has purchased 48 lots in the neighborhood, and plans to work alongside custom homebuilders and homebuyers to complete the neighborhood. The companies announced the deal Monday.

“Issaquah Highlands is among the Northwest’s premier communities and the acquisition of a large number of home sites in the highly desirable Harrison Street neighborhood represents a key opportunity for Taylor Development,” company President Kevin Taylor said in a release.

The neighborhood includes about 90 home sites — 35 have been sold, including 24 completed or under-construction.

The acquisition is part of a series of construction projects planned, completed or in progress for the highlands.
