Who will pay for a Costco expansion? That question has nearby business and property owners concerned.
Business and property owners have concerns about how proposed Costco growth might affect northern Issaquah, and about who pays for parts of the project.
In its Sept. 15 regular meeting, the Issaquah City Council held a public hearing regarding the draft agreement that has made its way through the Development Services Department in the past several months.

Something has got to be done about traffic in Issaquah.
When it takes longer to get across the city than it does to get from Issaquah to Seattle, that’s a traffic problem.
Front Street South/Issaquah-Hobart Road is a mess at the best of times. If there is an accident or construction along the road, you can count on sitting there upward of an hour to travel a few miles.

Demolition began Sept. 10 on the new residential project to be housed at Seventh Avenue Northwest and Northwest Gilman Boulevard.
There, 344 apartments in three five-story buildings will replace the strip mall and Lombardi’s restaurant that had been there for decades.
The project not only marks a change in that localized landscape, but for the whole of Issaquah as well.

Rowley Properties’ construction of the long-stay Homewood Suites by Hilton has brought a massive crane to central Issaquah.
It’s not the first one locals have seen, but it heralds the start of the Central Issaquah Plan, which city officials expect to change the face of the valley over the next 30 years or so.
The crane stands over the western edge of the city and so will hopefully not have any impact on surrounding traffic. However, it represents a symbol of things to come as parcels go on sale and some, like the Atlas project on Gilman Boulevard Northwest, sit in the middle of the permitting process.

Make your opinion heard about Gilman development
How many of you who witnessed the 2009 (and 1996 and 1990) flooding around Lombardi’s thought that the best solution for that site would be to add three five-story buildings, 400 automobiles and 600 residents? And with no requirement to do anything to keep the site from flooding again?

Proposal needs geo-tech, hydrological review
The proposed redevelopment at Seventh and Gilman (Antique Mall area) is the first go through our new Central Issaquah Plan regulations. One thing that has become clear is the difficulty of construction in high-ground water, near creek, earthquake hazard areas … much of the valley floor. The land at Seventh and Gilman has the further complication of being a Special Flood Hazard Area.
It is imperative in these difficult sites that there is belt-and-suspenders review of both the geo-tech report and the hydrologic modeling from the developer. Please require third-party peer review of both the geo-tech analysis and the model.

City and developer assurances couldn’t hold back a flood of doubt March 4.
The Rivers and Streams Board held a public hearing about plans for redevelopment on Seventh Avenue Northwest and Northwest Gilman Boulevard. Almost 40 people attended to hear how developer Lennar Multifamily Investors’ residential building plans might affect the existing floodplain.
“We’re primarily here to hear the public’s comments,” City Environmental Planner Peter Rosen said at the meeting. “There’s a lot of information and a lot of issues in terms of the building design, and that’s going to be dealt with by the development commission. Here, we’re trying to focus on the natural resource issues and flooding.”

Lennar Multifamily Investors wants to move quickly on the first redevelopment in central Issaquah.
The developer with a Seattle office submitted an official site development permit application Dec. 18. It has an interest in working with the city to construct the first large project under the Central Issaquah Plan. However, it also has an optimistic schedule.
“We’re basically just starting our review,” Project Oversight Manager Christopher Wright said. “There doesn’t seem to be any major issues.”

Three project proposals for Lake Sammamish State Park, including one to totally remake the park with a hotel/convention center, came to the city’s Economic Development Department by the deadline Sept. 9.
In a joint effort with Washington State Parks, the city released a request for proposals in August, asking for project ideas to reinvigorate and make use of the park under the redevelopment and restoration plan adopted in 2007.
Economic Development Director Keith Niven said the three full project outlines are markedly different, but he found positive aspects across the board.
“I see all of these to be viable choices for the park,” he said. “I think they can all fit. I don’t think there is anything on the table that can’t be mitigated.”
