Liberty Patriots ready to take on 2A

After 16 years at the helm, Liberty High School football coach Steve Valach has seen his fair share of senior classes.

This year’s, though, the class that will graduate in 2015, is in the running for the best he has ever coached.

“I think we were 3-7 in their sophomore year, so they’ve seen some lean times and still kept competing,” Valach said. “There’s some talent, and then it’s bigger than ability, it’s who they are as guys.”

As the Liberty High School football team wrapped up its spring practices June 17, not much looked different on the Patriots’ field.

Music blared, whistles sounded and footballs flew into the outstretched hands of open receivers.

This season will be different, though, for all Liberty sports teams, as they prepare to move from the 3A to 2A level.

The Skyline High School girls track and field team capped a solid 2014 season last weekend at the Class 4A state championships by winning the fourth-place trophy.

Skyline scored 35 points to finish behind Richland (37), Camas (48) and Federal Way (72), which successfully defended its state championship at Star Track XXXII, held May 29-31 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

Liberty track athletes excel at KingCo championships

Liberty High School junior Cherelle Demps continued a stellar track season with four wins at the KingCo 3A/2A Championship.

Demps won the 100 and 200 meter races and was a part of both the 4×100- and 4×200-meter relay teams that took home gold. The 4×100 relay team lowered their two-week old school record to 49.39 seconds.

Danielle Demps won the triple jump. Kelli Anderson won the high jump. Kelley Johnson broke a 1995 school record in the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.64, and also won the 100 hurdles.

Liberty track bests Interlake

April 29, 2014

As the Liberty High School track and field teams’ seniors gathered for a picture in what was the last home meet of their careers April 24, Patriots coach Mike Smith couldn’t believe how small the group was.

“It was kind of like, ‘Wow, that’s all we’ve got?’” he said. “But that’s pretty typical.”

The Patriots are indeed young this year, Smith said, but their youth didn’t hinder them as the boys and girls defeated Interlake April 24.

Patriots send five wrestlers to state

As the winter sports season comes to a close, five Liberty High School wrestlers aren’t ready to hang up their singlets just yet.

They have a date at the Tacoma Dome, where they will compete at the state tournament Feb. 21-22.

Joanna Moreira, Kyle Armstrong, Conner Small, Romney Noel and Quinn Magendanz will all compete among the state’s best at the 26th edition of the Mat Classic.

The Liberty High School wrestling team won the Barry Knott Classic Dec. 21, sending eight wrestlers to the final. Four emerged as champions.

Nate Sjoholm (145), Jimmy Andrus (152), Conner Small (160) and Romney Noel (170) each placed first in their weight classes.

The Maywood Middle School gymnasium may not technically be the Liberty High School wrestling team’s home site, but the Patriots sure looked comfortable there as they cruised to a dominant 58-4 win against Juanita on Dec. 12.

The Patriots won all but one of their matches, making a statement about the strength of this year’s team, led by first-year coach Wright Noel.

Local athletes win at state track championships

Immediately after Liberty High School track stars Alex Olobia and Hiron Redman competed in the last race of their high school careers, the seniors embraced as they shook off the disappointment of a second-place finish in the 4×400-meter relay at the state track and field championship.

“Bellevue had just that much more, just a little bit more,” Redman said. “He just got me by a 30th of a second. That’s it.”
