Issaquah Triathlon returns June 4

For many athletes, the triathlon season begins with the Issaquah Triathlon. This year’s Issaquah Triathlon is June 4 and is again held at Lake Sammamish State Park.

More than 1,000 athletes are expected to compete in the 11th annual event. The Issaquah Triathlon actually includes a variety of races.

The first race, the sprint triathlon, starts at 7 a.m. The sprint triathlon appeals to veteran triathletes, as well as novices.

The sprint triathlon course consists of a quarter-mile swim, a 15-mile bicycle ride and a 3-mile run.

The sprint duathlon consists of a 15-mile bike ride and a 3-mile run.

Among the other events are the 5K and 10K runs, and the kids’ triathlon. The kids’ triathlon is broken down into two groups, ages 10-13 and 9 and under.

Issaquah High School boys lacrosse ousted in semifinals

The Issaquah High School boys lacrosse team saw its season come to an end Wednesday when the Eagles lost to host Bainbridge 13-9 in the semifinals of the Washington State League’s Division I tournament.

Issaquah, which was knocked out in the semifinals for the second straight year, finished with a 14-6 record.

The Eagles’ offense had trouble clicking early and despite a strong attack in the final quarter could never overcome Bainbridge.

The host Spartans led 2-0 after the first quarter. Issaquah got on the scoreboard at 9:02 of the second period on an unassisted goal by senior Jake Fritz. However, Bainbridge quickly counter when Alex Rabin went coast-to-coast and hit Jacob Knostman on a pass. Knostman scored to give Bainbridge a two-goal lead again. The Spartans led 5-1 at halftime.

Liberty girls soccer team wins its sixth straight game

It’s been a while since the Liberty High School girls soccer team was one of the most dominant teams in the KingCo Conference and ranked among the best in the state.

However, the Patriots, under new coach Malia Arrant, have returned to their winning ways this season. Liberty won its sixth straight 3A/2A KingCo Conference game Sept. 30 by edging Mercer Island 3-2. Cassidy Nangle had a big night for the Patriots. She scored two goals and assisted on a goal by Kimi Fry.

The victory boosted Liberty’s league-leading record to 6-0.

Liberty also defeated host Juanita 2-0 Sept. 28. The Patriots scored both goals in the second half. Whitney Cain, assisted by Kailiana Johnson, broke a scoreless tie with a goal at the 60th minute. Nangle, assisted by Fry, scored eight minutes later.

Goalkeepers Macaire Ament and Jennifer Rucker recorded the shutout.

Issaquah volleyball team spikes Woodinville

The Issaquah High School volleyball team remained undefeated Monday after the Eagles downed host Woodinville 3-1 in a 4A KingCo Conference match. Issaquah won 25-17, 22-25, 25-16, 25-13.

Rachel Roeder paced the Eagles with 29 kills and nine aces. Alexa Batiquin added 18 digs, and Riley Sorenson had 50 assists and five aces.

Issaquah boosted its league record to 4-0 and season mark to 7-0. Woodinville suffered its first league defeat.

In other action, Newport defeated Skyline 25-17, 25-19, 25-18 to stay tied with Issaquah for first place. Madison Stoa had 18 assists and 11 digs, and Maddie Magee had 10 kills for Skyline, which is 1-3 in league play and 4-4 on the season.

Skyline swimmers win battle of champions

Katie Kinnear won two events and swam on a winning relay Thursday as she led the Skyline High School girls swim team to a dramatic 95-91 nonleague victory against host Mercer Island at Mary Wayte Pool.

The meet pitted Skyline, the defending 4A state champions, against Mercer Island, the defending 3A state champions.

Skyline, which hasn’t lost a dual meet since 2008, got victories from Kinnear, Meghan O’Keefe, Maria Volodkevich and Stephanie Munoz.

Kinnear won the 100 freestyle in 52:02 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 57:39. She was the leadoff swimmer on Skyline’s winning 200 medley relay, which posted a time of 1:51.47. Jessie Dart, Nina Zook and Volodkevich were other members of the relay.

The Liberty High School girls soccer team got its fifth straight 3A/2A KingCo Conference victory Tuesday when the Patriots defeated the host Juanita Rebels 2-0.

Liberty, which leads the league with a 5-0 mark, scored its goals in the second half. Whitney Cain, assisted by Kailiana Johnson, broke a scoreless tie with a goal at the 60th minute. Cassidy Nangle, assisted by Kimi Fry, scored eight minutes later.

Skyline falls short against Eastlake

After a Brian Mogg birdie on the third hole at Sahalee Country Club, things were looking up for the Skyline High School boys golf team Sept. 23.

Of all the matches the Spartans wanted to win this season, a win over Eastlake on its home course would have given Skyline some needed confidence in the hot 4A KingCo Conference race. Read more

Issaquah High School soccer blanks Roosevelt

Audrey Thomas scored a goal at the 48th minute Thursday as the Issaquah High School girls soccer team defeated visiting Roosevelt 1-0 in a 4A KingCo Conference game in Gary Moore Stadium.

Thomas was assisted on the goal by Rachel Wheeler. Goalkeeper Brooke Miller recorded the shutout.

The victory was the sixth straight for Issaquah, 6-1-0 overall and 2-0 in league action.

In other games, Eastlake scored four times in the second half to overcome Redmond 4-3; and it was Inglemoor 2, Garfield 1, and Woodinville 2, Ballard 1.

Issaquah High School boys golf coach Tom Bakamus knew his team would have to play its best match of the season to beat Eastlake Sept. 16 at the Sahalee Country Club.

The Eagles had a solid effort, but Eastlake proved too strong as the host Wolves captured the 4A KingCo Conference match.

Eastlake won with 193 strokes to Issaquah’s 211. Issaquah had a four-match KingCo win streak snapped in the process.

Spencer Weiss, of Eastlake, was the medalist with a 1-over-par 37. Alex Ciszewski topped the Eagles with a 40.

Nevertheless, Issaquah’s young squad is off to a strong start. Six seniors graduated from last year’s team, and the Eagles lost another player who moved to Florida.

“We are inexperienced, but deep with the sophomore class,” Bakamus said. Read more

Liberty boys cruise to cross country win

The Liberty High School boys cross country placed five runners in the top 10 and cruised to a 3A/2A KingCo Conference victory Wednesday at home against Interlake and Lake Washington.

Tyler Westenbroek, of Liberty, finished first in the 5,000-meter race in 18 minutes, 34 seconds. Teammate Alex Velasquez was second in 18:36. Nick Knobich and Scott Turner were fourth and fifth respectively for the Patriots and Hiron Redmond was eighth.

Liberty won the meet with a low of 20 points. Interlake was second with 35 and Lake Washington took third with 83.
