The Issaquah High School volleyball team seems to be picking up where it left off last season – hot!
Issaquah finished the 2009 season with three straight victories at the 4A state tournament. Entering this week, the Eagles had won their first four matches of the season. Included among the triumphs were 4A KingCo Conference victories against Inglemoor and Bothell.
And, the Eagles also had a special 3-1 nonleague victory against Kentwood, which defeated Issaquah in the opening round of last year’s state tournament. Read more

The Mercer Island Islanders have usually had their way with the Liberty High School volleyball team in recent years. However, the Islanders’ dominance came to an end Monday when the host Patriots prevailed 3-2 in a dramatic 3A/2A KingCo Conference match.
Liberty won the tie-breaking fifth game 15-5 to hand Mercer Island its first loss of the season. Mercer Island won the first game 25-12 but Liberty bounced back to win the next two games 25-19 and 25-22. The Islanders sent the match into overtime by winning the fourth game 25-22.
The Patriots, 4-2 in league play, received outstanding efforts from several players. Megan Tsutakawa had a team-high 32 assists. Katie Walsh had a team-high 12 kills and four aces. Kristy Braunston had a strong defensive game with a team-high 15 digs. Aspen Winegar had eight kills and 10 digs, Sarah Hewitt had five kills and five blocks, Molly Culwell had six kills and four aces, and Jessica Pickering had eight kills.
Mercer Island, which entered the match in first place, is 5-1 in league play and 6-1 for the season.

Senior outside hitter Rachel Roeder’s offensive and defensive efforts Monday helped spark the Issaquah High School volleyball team to a 3-0 victory against visiting Inglemoor in the 4A KingCo Conference opener for both teams. Issaquah won the games 25-11, 25-14, 25-21.
Roeder, one of six seniors who have been on the varsity squad all four years, had 12 kills, 12 digs and three aces. Seniors Sarah Hanna, Alexa Batiquin and Riley Sorenson were other key contributors for the Eagles.
Hanna, an outside hitter, had 14 kills. Batiquin, a setter, had 10 digs and Sorenson, an outside hitter, had 32 assists.
It wasn’t just a senior show, however. Junior outside hitter Sam Rogers contributed five kills for the Eagles, 3-0 overall on the season. Issaquah has plenty of experience and depth this season. The players want to improve on last year’s performance, which wasn’t bad, as the Eagles won the district title and finished fifth at the 4A state tournament.

The Liberty High School girls soccer team is off to a great start in 3A/2A KingCo Conference action. The Patriots won their second game of the week Thursday by blanking visiting Bellevue 2-0.
Cassidy Nangle scored both goals for Liberty in the first half.
Goalkeepers Macaire Ament and Jennifer Rucker recorded the shutout.
Liberty is 2-0 in KingCo and 2-2 on the season.
In other action, it was Mercer Island 2, Juanita 1; Interlake 4, Lake Washington 3; and Mount Si 2, Sammamish 1.

The Issaquah and Skyline high school volleyball teams each opened their seasons last week with two nonleague victories.
Issaquah defeated Kentwood 3-1 Sept. 9. The Eagles won the first game 27-25, lost the second game 25-23, but bounced back to take the next two 25-19 and 26-16. Rachel Roeder had 20 kills and 15 digs to lead Issaquah. Sarah Hanna added 18 kills, Alexa Batiquin had 21 digs, Riley Sorenson contributed 42 assists and Sam Rogers had five aces.
The Eagles swept by Eastside Catholic 3-0 Sept. 11. Issaquah won the games 25-12, 25-14, 25-15. Roeder had 15 kills and three aces. Hanna added 13 kills and Sorenson had 30 assists.
Skyline downed Liberty 25-11, 25-17, 25-23 Sept. 7. Halle Erdahl had 12 kills and 10 digs to lead the Spartans. Maddie Magee added 15 kills and four aces, and Madison Stoa had 31 assists.
The Spartans downed Lake Washington 3-1 Sept. 10. Skyline won the first two games 25-20, 25-18 before dropping the third game 25-18. The Spartans rallied to win the fourth and deciding game 25-16. Kennedy Stoa had 16 digs and Madison Stoa had 31 assists for Skyline. Magee added 14 kills and Joceyln Reynolds had seven kills and three blocks.

Ben Halter shot a 1-under-par 35 Wednesday as he led the Issaquah High School boys golf team to a 184-211 victory against visiting Garfield at the Snoqualmie Falls Golf Course.
The win was the second straight for Issaquah in 4A KingCo Conference competition.
Alex Ciszewski was second for Issaquah with a par 36. Brendan Jung and Matthew Gann each had 37s for the Eagles.

The first time I met Skyline High School’s varsity volleyball coach, Mark Peterson, I was terrified.
He had come to practice to encourage us to try out for club volleyball and become dedicated to the sport. Being my awkward sixth-grade self, I tried desperately to impress him, to try to prove that I would one day be the varsity setter.
For the past seven years, I have seen how dedicated Mark has been to the volleyball program.
For the past 10 seasons, Mark has seen many girls grow up and go off to college to further pursue the sport. We, too, have seen him mature into both a loving husband and father of two children. Read more
