The economy lurched from the recession, population growth all but stalled and Issaquah — after cutbacks and setbacks in 2009 — defied the odds to reach major milestones throughout 2010.

Momentum returned in 2010 after a year spent in a holding pattern. Set against the backdrop of a fragile recovery, leaders cut the ribbon on businesses and roads, laid the foundation for preservation and construction, and marked tragedies and successes. Read more

Work will wrap soon on roundabout

May 14, 2010

NEW — 6 a.m. May 14, 2010

Crews expect to complete the last pieces of the Southeast 43rd Way and East Lake Sammamish Parkway Southeast roundabout soon.

The remaining work includes the installation of the last section of extruded curb, permanent pavement markings and landscaping. Officials said lane closures will be required for the work, but crews will avoid work during peak commute times.

Inclement weather delayed final paving the roundabout from late March until mid-April. Workers completed initial paving for the project Nov. 17 and the roundabout opened the next day.

Crews planned to construct the roundabout in mid- to late-summer, but unforeseen utility work and weather conditions extended the construction schedule.

City Council sets parks, transportation among 2011 goals

May 4, 2010

City Council members outlined goals for parks, technology, economic development and transportation to be accomplished next year. The council eschewed broad policy goals and recommended specific projects.

Members culled 62 suggestions into a handful of rough goals. Municipal staffers will then hone the list into a final stack of goals for the council to approve next month.

The council gathered in a Public Works Operations Building conference room May 1 for the daylong discussion to set goals for 2011.

Council President John Traeger encouraged members to offer multiple suggestions.

“There are no bad ideas, and no goal is too big or too small,” he said.

The retreat included initial discussion about the upcoming budget. City department chiefs use the goals set by the council to formulate budgets for the upcoming year.

Expect roundabout lane closures

January 30, 2010

NEW — 6 a.m. Jan. 30, 2010

Officials closed the southbound bypass lane on the new roundabout at East Lake Sammamish Parkway and Southeast 43rd Way for about two weeks, while crews revise signage and pavement markings.

The roundabout will be completed after final paving occurs; the task depends on weather conditions. Lanes will close for a few days — or during a single-day full intersection closure — during final paving.

The city and contractor will work to limit impacts to drivers. Officials will notify residents at least a week before final paving starts. Check the city Web site or 1700-AM radio station for updates.

Workers completed initial paving for the project Nov. 17 and the roundabout opened the next day. Crews planned to construct the roundabout in mid- to late-summer, but unforeseen utility work and weather conditions extended the construction schedule by almost two months.
